Professor Ashok Sahni, Ph.D. (Minnesota), took over as RAC Chairman of Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeobotany in August 2007. He was Professor of Geology, and Coordinator UGC Spl. Assistance Prog. Centre of Advanced Study in Geology, Panjab University, Chandigarh, India. He has subject expertise on Application of Electron Microscopy to Geology; Biomineralization; Advanced Invertebrate and Vertebrate Palaeontology; Palaeobiogeography; Evolutionary theory, etc.
He has won three Gold Medals for academic excellence at university level and L. RAMA RAO GOLD MEDAL for research contributions to Indian stratigraphy and palaeontology, Geological Society of India. He has been Humboldt Fellow, Bonn, Germany for the years 1977-1978, 1983, and 1995. He was Visiting Professor, University of Bonn, Spring Session, 1995 and Smithsonian Fellow, National Museum Natural History, Washington, D.C. 1998. |

He has authored and/or edited 5 Books; contributed chapters in books published by Plenum, Elsevier, Cambridge University, Academic Press, Balkema, etc. and has over 150 scientific contributions published in international journals in India, USA, France, England, Japan, Czechoslovakia, Italy, Holland, Korea, China, USSR and Germany

He is Fellow of Indian National Science Academy (FNA), New Delhi, 1992; Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore since 1987; National Science Academy of India, Allahabad, 1997 Associe Etranger, Geological Society France, Paris since 1984 and life member of various academic bodies. |
